Illustrative forensic story: account takeover

An employee denied downloading a folder of confidential files. The access log seemed to disagree: it showed activity under their account at 2:14 am.

Investigators first checked the sign-in history. There was no new password entry or multifactor prompt immediately before the download. The activity appeared to use an existing session. That raised the possibility that someone else had obtained access to the session, but the log alone could not prove how.

The next steps were to preserve the account logs, inspect the employee’s device and compare the download time with device activity. Investigators also checked which files the service recorded as transferred, rather than assuming every file in the folder had been taken.

An account name in a log identifies the credentials or session used. It does not, by itself, identify the person at the keyboard. A sound investigation keeps that distinction visible until the supporting evidence is found.
