Staff discovered the ransom note on Monday morning. Their first question was when the attack began.
The note was only the most visible event. Investigators preserved system logs and worked backwards through file changes, account activity and alerts. They found unusual access to a server before the files were encrypted. A scheduled process had then run across several machines overnight.
That timeline mattered. Restoring a backup made before encryption would recover files, but a backup made after the earlier intrusion might leave the original access problem unresolved. The team needed to establish which accounts and systems were affected before choosing a recovery point.
The investigation produced two separate answers: when the damage became visible, and when suspicious activity first appeared. In a ransomware case, confusing those moments can lead to an incomplete recovery. The paper trail begins before the ransom note.
